(EN) I must confess that after Saint Petersburg and its magic it would be really difficult for another big city to conquer my heart right now. And it was.
My first impression of Moscow was at night and, wow, it is so beautiful! There's life everywhere and all the lightened buildings are just mesmerizing. Still, it is the largest metropolitan European area and its people are like... Capital people ;) Don't get me wrong - I am also from one - but it is indeed pretty visible the stressed atmosphere around most of them.
Nevertheless Moscow is undoubtedly a gorgeous city!
(PT) Devo confessar que depois da magia de São Petersburgo, seria difícil uma grande cidade conquistar-me o coração num tão curto espaço de tempo. E realmente foi.
A minha primeira impressão de Moscovo foi à noite e - uau - é tudo tão maravilhoso! Há vida em toda a parte e os edifícios iluminados deixam-te de queixo caído. Ainda assim é a maior cidade metropolitana da Europa e as pessoas de lá são... Pessoas da capital ;) Não me leves a mal - eu também sou de uma - mas é sem dúvida visível a atmosfera stressante na maior parte delas.
Não obstante, Moscovo é sem dúvida uma cidade deslumbrante.
(EN) When I was living in Iceland I worked in tourism. I remember thinking how funny it was when Asian people came around with their cell phones showing me a picture of what they wanted to order or simply a translated sentence on Google. Guys... Imagine what is like not being able to read the Roman/Latin alphabet :| Seriously, I had never put myself in that situation until I finally had to. When there's no lingua franca to save your ass, Google Translator is the best XXI century invention!
It is really difficult to find English speakers in Moscow which was something I wasn't expecting. I've booked shared bedrooms in hostels as an excuse to meet people and socialize. Well.. In both big cities and now in Kazan, I've only had Russian people living with me. And I mean living - most of them literally live in hostels. Of course I came to Russia to meet native people and their culture but it's hard when you're the only foreigner around not speaking their language.
I've made two friends from the beginning: a 50 year old football lover who always tried really hard to talk to me but understood little and the lovely receptionist who understood like an A1 and spoke like an A0 :D And there it was... Google translator to save us! I've realized it's very common here - they go straight to their phones, speak to them and then... Magic! - the phones speak to me! (The translating camera is also pretty useful if you want to know exactly what you're buying for dinner ;)
(PT) Quando vivia na Islândia trabalhava em turismo. Lembro-me de pensar o quão engraçado eram os Asiáticos quando me chegavam com o seu telemóvel a mostrar uma fotografia do que queriam comprar ou com o pedido traduzido no Google. Pessoal... Imaginem como seria se não conseguissem ler o alfabeto Romano/Latim :| A sério, nunca me tinha posto nessa situação até ter de o fazer. Quando não há língua franca que te safe, o Google Tradutor é a melhor invenção do século XXI!
É muito difícil encontrar pessoas que falem inglês em Moscovo - algo que não estava à espera. Reservei quartos partilhados em hostels como desculpa para conhecer pessoas e socializar. Humm... Tanto nas duas cidades maiores como agora em Kazan só vivi com Russos. E digo vivi - a maior parte deles vivem mesmo em hostels. Claro que vim para a Rússia para conhecer os nativos e a sua cultura mas é complicado quando és a única pessoa de fora que não fala a língua deles.
Fiz dois amigos desde o início: um amante de futebol nos seus 50 anos que se esforçava imenso para comunicar comigo e o amável rececionista que entendia nível A1 e falava nível A0 :D E lá estava ele... O Google Tradutor para nos salvar! Apercebi-me que é muito comum aqui - eles pegam logo nos seus telemóveis, falam com eles e... Puff, magia! - os telemóveis falam comigo! (A opção da câmara também é bastante útil se quiseres saber exatamente o que estás a comprar para o jantar ;)
(EN) On my second day I've met Natalia - the climax of my socializing moments in Moscow. Natalia helped me getting my train ticket from Mongolia to China and I went to her office to pick it up. We've spent 30 minutes just talking and laughing. It was awesome. She was so sociable and open minded I was sad she wasn't one of my roommates so we could spend more time together! She gave me pretty useful tips and told me I would probably meet mostly foreigners on Trans Siberian trains because Russians travel in 3rd class, not 2nd. "Well, maybe not to Kazan", she said. And yes, she was right.
In my first night train my roomies were three Russian ladies. Once again, no English. They were super helpful and nice, offering food all the time and one of them even rang a friend to help me communicate with the train attendant (a funnier alternative to Google ;D)!
(PT) No meu segundo dia conheci a Natalia - o clímax dos meus momentos de socialização em Moscovo. A Natalia ajudou-me a comprar o meu bilhete de comboio da Mongólia para a China e eu fui ao seu escritório para o buscar. Passámos 30 minutos a falar e a rir. Foi ótimo. Ela era tão social e mente aberta que tive pena que não fosse uma das minhas colegas de quarto para que pudéssemos passar mais tempo juntas! Deu-me imensos conselhos e disse-me que nos comboios Trans Siberianos deveria conhecer bem mais estrangeiros visto que os Russos viajam em 3ª classe e não em 2ª. "Bem, talvez não quando fores para Kazan", disse ela. E sim, tinha razão.
No meu primeiro comboio noturno as minhas colegas de compartimento eram três senhoras Russas. Mais uma vez, zero de inglês. Eram super simpáticas e prestáveis, sempre a oferecer comida e uma delas até ligou a uma amiga para que me ajudasse a comunicar com a rapariga que trabalhava no comboio (uma alternativa ao Google mais divertida ;D)!
(EN) I think I've felt lonelier in Moscow due to its greatness. You see thousands of people everyday and you talk to none. If you know me you also know how communicative I am - I really need to talk (sometimes I talk too much but usually people can handle it :D)
Now I'm in Kazan and I'm in love with this place. I'm going to explore a bit more and I'll leave you with what was the best for me in the capital city - its underground stations. You've probably heard of it but you do need to see it! And if you're a photography lover you can literally spend 0,60€ and get some incredible shots.
I could easily spend a whole day under Moscow's ground.
(PT) Acho que me senti mais sozinha em Moscovo pela sua grandeza. És capaz de ver milhares de pessoas por dia e de não falar com nenhuma. Se me conheces sabes o quão comunicativa sou - preciso mesmo de falar (às vezes falo demais mas normalmente as pessoas aguentam :D)
Agora estou em Kazan e estou apaixonada por este lugar. Vou explorar mais um pouco e deixar-te com o que foi o melhor de Moscovo para mim - as estações de metro. Provavelmente já ouviste falar delas, mas tens mesmo de as experienciar! E se és amante de fotografia podes literalmente gastar 0,60€ e tirares fotos incríveis.
Podia tranquilamente passar um dia inteiro debaixo do chão de Moscovo.
