(EN) So... Still not convinced?! I've lived nearly a year and a half in this magic country and now - 3 moths after leaving it - I decided to share some of the most beautiful places I've seen.
Although I've checked these pictures a dozen times I find myself amazed again and again. This post is basically a photo gallery, I'll try to convert into words some of the indescribable things I've lived in Iceland, but if even you don't really care about that - use your next 5 minutes to be astonished! ;)

(PT) Então... Ainda não estás convencido/a?! Eu vivi neste país mágico quase um ano e meio e agora, 3 meses depois de o deixar, decidi partilhar contigo alguns dos lugares mais bonitos que vi. Apesar de já ter visto estas fotografias dezenas de vezes continuo a dar por mim maravilhada a olhar para elas. Esta publicação é basicamente uma "galeria de fotografias", vou tentar converter em palavras algumas das coisas indescritíveis que vivi na Islândia, mas mesmo que não queiras muito saber disso - usa os teus próximos 5 minutos para ficares estupefato/a! ;) (O material que vais ver é um apanhado geral das minhas viagens pela ilha - para teres uma ideia mais clara, repara no mapa.)

(EN) If you look at these last two pictures you can see my working place, by Gullfoss (the Golden Waterfall) and some of the people who helped me survive the Winters and the social isolation - my flatmates.
Iceland is an amazing country indeed but you do need nice people around you in order to escape the Winter's exhaustion/depression. At least I needed them!
In the Summer you can get literally 24h daylight, which is awesome and you'll have plenty of energy for anything at anytime. But in the Winter... You can also get almost 24h nighttime and you'll need some good flatmates around you ;) I was pretty lucky, I've made really good friends in that house!
Reminding you that I was living 42km away from the closest town (Selfoss) and 100km from Reykjavík - here are some things I've learned through this experience and some tips:
• If you already like drinking, you'll drink even more (evidence in picture above). • If you've never needed vitamins in your life, you'll start needing them.
• If you do go out eventually, you'll find yourself talking to any stranger you see around (just because you enjoy seeing people). • If you get sick, you were certainly contaminated by a nice tourist.
• If it stinks sulfure (you'll start recognising the smell), there's probably a natural hot spring nearby.
• In the Summer you'll miss watching the stars and the moon; in the Winter you'll miss feeling the sun.
• If you think that drinking water from the tap is disgusting you'll change your mind after trying the best water ever.
• If you have nice flatmates like I did, there will always be somebody knocking on your door to tell you that there are Northern Lights outside.
• Icelandic horses are horses, not ponies. Do not call them ponies.
• If you think Icelandic people are cold huge vikings you'll also change your mind when you realise they are super open minded and funny (but still huge).
• 09°C will feel like 20°C; -14°C will feel like -25°C - do not trust the forecast, you'll have all seasons in one day 90% of the times.
• And finally: if you think your country is safe or expensive... It is not. ;D
(PT) Se olhares para estas duas últimas fotografias podes ver o meu local de trabalho, ao lado de Gullfoss (a Cascata de Ouro) e algumas das pessoas que me ajudaram muito a sobreviver ao Inverno e ao isolamento social - os meus colegas de casa.
A Islândia é um sonho, sem dúvida, mas precisas mesmo de pessoas amigas que te façam escapar à exaustão/depressão do Inverno. Pelo menos eu precisei! No Verão chegas a ter 24h de luz de dia, o que é ótimo e vais ter energia para fazer qualquer coisa a qualquer hora. Mas no Inverno... Também chegas a ter quase 24h de noite e vais precisar de uns bons colegas de casa à tua volta ;) Eu tive sorte, fiz grandes amigos naquela casa! Relembrando que vivia a 42km de distância da cidade mais perto (Selfoss) e a 100km da capital, Reykjavík - aqui vão algumas das coisas que aprendi com esta experiência e algumas dicas: • Se já gostas de beber, vais beber ainda mais (evidência na fotografia acima).
• Se nunca precisaste de tomar vitaminas na tua vida, vais começar a precisar.
• Se eventualmente saíres à noite, vais dar por ti a falar com qualquer estranho que te passe à frente (simplesmente porque estás a adorar ver pessoas).
• Se ficares doente, foi com certeza um turista simpático que te contaminou.
• Se tresandar a enxofre (vais começar a reconhecer o cheiro), há provavelmente uma piscina natural de água quente perto de ti.
• No Verão vais ter saudades de ver a lua e as estrelas; no Inverno vais ter saudades de sentir o sol. • Se achas que beber água da torneira é nojento, vais mudar de ideias quando experimentares a melhor água do mundo.
• Se tiveres colegas de casa porreiros como eu tive, alguém te vai bater à porta para te avisar que há Auroras Boreais lá fora.
• Os cavalos islandeses são cavalos, não são póneis. Eles não gostam quando os chamam de póneis.
• Se achas que os Islandeses são pessoas frias também vais mudar ideias quando vires que são pessoas divertidas com uma mente super aberta. • 09°C vão parecer 20°C; -14°C vão parecer -25°C - não confies na previsão meteorológica, vais ter as quatro estações do ano num só dia, 90% das vezes.
• E finalmente: se achas que o teu país é seguro ou caro... Não é. ;D

(EN) Reykjavík is one of the cutest capitals I've been to. It is the biggest and the most populated city in Iceland (we're talking about a 273 km2 place with around 126 000 people :D)
After some time, most people want to move to Reykjavík - there's a good nightlife, civilisation, loads of shopping places and it's by the ocean. I'm still curious to live there one day. But if your goal is to save some money like mine was, being in the middle of nowhere with very few distractions will help you ;)
I went out to the capital nearly two months after arriving in Iceland - I felt like I was in New York. There were people, lights, noise, live music... Wow. Like I said earlier, suddenly I was talking to every stranger who was passing by! "Where are you from?", "Welcome to Iceland!"... (You might look a bit crazy/over sociable after a while ;D)
(PT) Reykjavík é uma das capitais mais fofas que conheci. É a cidade maior e a mais populosa da Islândia (estamos a falar de 273 km2 com cerca de 126 000 pessoas :D)
Depois de algum tempo, a maior parte das pessoas quer se mudar para Reykjavík - a vida noturna é boa, há civilização, muitas lojas e é à beira-mar. Ainda estou curiosa por lá morar um dia. Mas se o teu objetivo for juntar dinheiro como era o meu, é muito mais fácil fazê-lo no meio do nada com poucas distrações à volta ;)
Eu só fui sair à noite na capital depois de dois meses na Islândia - senti-me em Nova Iorque. Pessoas, luzes, barulho, música ao vivo... Wow. Tal como disse há pouco, do nada estava a meter conversa com qualquer estranho que passava por mim! "De onde é que vocês são?", "Benvindo(s) à Islândia!"... (É possível que pareças um bocado louco/demasiado social ao fim de uns tempos ;D)

(EN) Waterfalls, waterfalls everywhere! Imagine a country where all the tourism is about nature. Iceland is all about glaciers, northern lights, vulcanos, landscapes and waterfalls (in every corner). Electricity, hot water... Everything comes from nature. For me this is what turns this island into something so special and magic. I won't lie and say it is a cheap one-weekend-trip, it is pretty expensive and you should spend at least 10 days there - but you'll never forget those 10 days. The best option is to rent a car (compared to the money you'll spend in touristic buses, it's way better to be able to go wherever you want and to make your own schedule) and to go along all the Ring Road - Route 1 goes all around the island passing by some of the most iconic places. Unless your goal is to see the northern lights: go in the Summer. A lot of roads are closed in Winter, you'll spend way more time driving due to weather conditions and you'll have few hours of daylight to enjoy and actually see things. In the Summer you can tour around for 20 hours if you want to, you can hike through the Highlands and Westfjords and you can see some living beings other than horses, crows and foxes! ;)
(PT) Cascatas, cascatas em toda a parte! Imagina um país onde todo o turismo gira à volta da natureza. A Islândia é glaciares, auroras boreais, vulcões, paisagens e cascatas (em todo o canto). Electricidade, água quente... Tudo vem da natureza. Para mim, é isso que faz com esta ilha seja tão especial e mágica.
Não te vou mentir e dizer que é uma viagem barata de fim-de-semana, é bastante cara e devias despender de pelo menos 10 dias - mas nunca te vais esquecer desses 10 dias. A melhor opção é alugar um carro (comparado com o valor dos autocarros turísticos, é muito mais viável poderes ir onde quiseres e fazeres os teus próprios horários) e percorreres toda a Ring Road - a estrada número 1 faz a volta a toda a ilha e passa pelos lugares mais icónicos. A menos que o teu objetivo seja ver as auroras boreais: vai no Verão. Muitas estradas estão fechadas no Inverno, vais perder mais tempo a conduzir devido às condições meteorológicas e vais ter poucas horas de luz de dia para realmente veres coisas. No Verão podes fazer turismo por 20 horas se quiseres, podes caminhas pelas Terras Altas e pelos Fiordes do Oeste e vais ver mais seres vivos para além de cavalos, corvos e raposas! ;)
