MELBOURNE
(EN) 14/11/2019, after a 26 hour trip (and I mean I left Portugal at 8am & got to Australia at 9pm on the following day) - I finally landed in Melbourne.
It was the first time I wasn’t moving in by myself. This time I took this random cute Polish guy called Maciej with me. Melbourne made us both feel very small. The buzzing city lifestyle, the 24/7 crowd…
It is indeed an easy place to start in Australia - in two days we were renting a flat, in five we had jobs. Through our first weekend we met pretty awesome people in the hostel we were staying in and since we moved to a couple blocks away we could see them pretty often.
(PT) 14/11/2019, depois de uma viagem de 26h (e quando digo "26h" na realidade quero dizer que saí de Portugal às 8h e aterrei na Austrália às 21h do dia seguinte) cheguei finalmente a Melbourne.
Era a primeira vez que não estava a mudar-me para um outro país sozinha. Desta vez levei um rapaz Polaco muito fofinho chamado Maciej. Melbourne fez-nos sentir super pequenos. O caos da vida citadina, o número de pessoas que corre pela cidade 24/7...
É sem dúvida um lugar fácil por onde começar - em dois dias estávamos a alugar um quarto e em cinco tínhamos trabalho. Durante o primeiro fim de semana conhecemos pessoas lindas no hostel onde ficámos e, visto que nos mudámos para um apartamento a dois quarteirões de lá, conseguimos facilmente manter contato.
(EN) After a little while that random cute Polish guy called Maciej broke my heart and told me he would have to go back home. I realised that I was going to be by myself very soon once again... But that actually got me focusing on what was to come.
I’d finally get a van. I had to. I’d always had that dream and it seemed so damn easy doing it in Oz. Everybody who comes with this Working Holiday Visa gets a van or a car and sells it before leaving the country. Perfect, right?
Well, it is. Although the process of searching for sellers & buyers might take a long time and one can get demotivated - it is the first country I’ve been to where you can easily do it.
I’ll go back to that topic later, but first I’ll finish my summary on Melbourne.
Please understand that my point of view is from a person who lived in the Central Business Department (CBD) - the most hectic neighbourhood, where the city never sleeps.
You should visit Brighton, St. Kilda and, my favourite, Fitzroy - the cutest neighbourhood with both incredible day & nightlife.
We were living in front of a main train station, on a forty-five floor building with a swimming pool that I never touched and a gym I’ve been like 6 times - worth the luxury for AU$150/w which is actually "cheap" for Melbourne! Our flatmates were Belgian, Taiwanese, Danish and German. It was a pretty quiet house but the only time we went out together was quiet… memorable!
Maciej left 3 weeks after we arrived, I stayed 4 more. At the same time I felt super depressed when he was gone (you have to understand he is very lovable and funny and he is a big friend of mine), I was also getting motivated with my job. Working in this Vita Ristorante made my stay in Melbourne definitely better - my coworkers were amazing and we had lots of fun.
(PT) Pouco tempo se passou quando o tal rapaz Polaco muito fofinho me partiu o coração e disse que ia embora. De repente apercebi-me que, mais uma vez, estaria por minha conta. E na realidade foi isso que me fez começar a "planear" os primeiros meses de 2020.
Ia finalmente comprar uma van. Tinha de ser. Sempre tive esse sonho e parecia tão fácil fazê-lo aqui! Toda a gente que vem com este visto de um ano acaba por comprar um carro ou uma van e antes de se irem embora, vendem-no/a. Plano perfeito, certo?
E é. Apesar do processo de procura por vendedores/compradores poder ser longo e acabares por ficar um bocado desmotivado, é o primeiro país onde sinto que é um sonho possível de concretizar.
Bom, mas volto a esse assunto mais abaixo, primeiro vou terminar o meu resumo de Melbourne.
Tens de ter em conta que o meu ponto de vista é de uma pessoa que viveu num bairro chamado CBD, o que traduzindo ao pé da letra significa Departamento Central de Negócios - o bairro mais caótico, aquele onde vês que a cidade realmente não dorme. Se visitares Melbourne aconselho-te a ires Brighton, St. Kilda ou, o meu preferido, Fitzroy - o bairro mais fofo e maravilhoso tanto durante o dia como durante a noite.
Nós estávamos a morar à frente de uma das estações de comboio principais, num prédio de 45 andares com uma piscina onde nunca pus os pés e um ginásio onde pisei umas 6 meses - mas valeu a pena o luxo por $150/semana, o que para Melbourne não é caro... Os nossos colegas de casa eram da Bélgica, Taiwan, Dinamarca e Alemanha.
O Maciej foi-se embora ao fim de 3 semanas, eu fiquei mais 4. Ao mesmo tempo que estava super deprimida por ele ter ido embora (tens de entender que ele é realmente muito fofinho, adorável e um grande amigo meu), também estava super motivada com o novo emprego. Trabalhar no Vita Ristorante fez com que a minha estadia em Melbourne fosse muito melhor - os meus colegas eram maravilhosos e diverti-me imenso com eles.
(EN) Before I got to Australia I already knew my time in Melbourne was going to be short. In the beginning of the year I’d have to be in Gold Coast (nine hours north from Sydney) to do what I actually love for another five weeks - teaching and working with kids!
On January 5th I had to say goodbye and I had no idea how better things were getting for me! :)
(PT) Ainda antes de vir para a Austrália, já sabia que o meu tempo por Melbourne tinha um limite. No início do ano teria de ir para Gold Coast (nove horas a norte de Sydney) fazer algo que realmente me apaixona por mais cinco semanas - dar aulas e trabalhar com crianças!
A 5 de Janeiro tive de dizer adeus e na altura não fazia ideia de todas as coisas lindas que estava prestes a viver! :)
GOLD COAST
(EN) The first couple of weeks I was provided with a Host Family. Robyn and Julian lived on top of a hill surrounded by gorgeous trees and amazing wildlife. They love travelling so every night we’d have pretty awesome conversations about our world tours.
Waking up at 6.30am and having a coffee on this balcony below with that stunning view accompanied with dozens of birds singing is one of the best memories I’m taking from Gold Coast.
(PT) Nas primeiras duas semanas fiquei com uma família de acolhimento. A Robyn e o Julian vivem no topo de uma montanha rodeados por árvores maravilhosas e vida selvagem incrível. Como pessoas que adoram viajar, encontrámos muitas coisas em comum e passámos as nossas noites a trocar histórias sobre os nossos passeios pelo mundo fora.
Acordar às 6h30 e tomar aquele café matinal nesta varanda com esta vista e dezenas de pássaros a cantarem aos meus ouvidos é uma das melhores memórias que levo de Gold Coast.
(EN) For two weeks I was in charge of twenty five 12 year old kids from China. They were pretty busy but fun days!
I was sharing the room with their Chinese teachers and although only one out of three spoke English, that didn’t stop us from having some good laughs! I’ve learned some Mandarin and it was beautiful to see how proud they all were every time I spit a word or two.
When this group left, China sent out a travel warning due to our friend Corona which resulted on the 125 students who were about to fly to Australia to cancel their trip. Since I’d already signed my contract I ended up being sent for a week to help out in Brisbane. After such an amazing time in Gold Coast I wasn’t ready for the big city life again. I’ve met few but great people which helped the days go faster but I did miss the big family I left back in Surfers Paradise.
(PT) Durante essas duas semanas tive a meu cargo 25 crianças Chinesas de 12 anos. Foram dias em cheio mas super divertidos.
Na casa da família de acolhimento onde fiquei acabei por dividir o quarto com as professoras que acompanharam o grupo e apesar de só uma em três falar Inglês, isso não nos impediu de nos rirmos que nem uns perdidos. Fui aprendendo mais um bocadinho de Mandarim e era lindo vê-los a todos orgulhosos cada vez que eu cuspia uma ou duas palavras na sua língua.
Quando este grupo foi embora a China lançou o alerta de viagem por causa do nosso amigo Corona, o que resultou no cancelamento dos 125 alunos que estavam prestes a voar para a Austrália. Como já tinha o meu contrato assinado, acabei por ter de trabalhar na escola em Brisbane durante uma semana. Depois do tempo maravilhoso que passei em Gold Coast não estava de todo outra vez pronta para uma grande cidade. Conheci poucas mas boas pessoas que me ajudaram a sobreviver, mas senti bastante falta da família que deixei para trás em Surfers Paradise.
(EN) I ended up staying in Surf Inn for over two weeks and this place really made me feel like home. The staff were so friendly and the hostel so clean that you just feel like staying a bit longer and longer.
I DID get my so desired van while I was there and I kept sleeping at their parking lot while paying a small amount to use their facilities (something pretty common in Oz).
It was really hard to say goodbye, but I was also looking forward to start the very first road trip with my gorgeous palm tree lady, Bella.
(PT) Acabei por ficar no Surf Inn por mais de duas semanas pois foi um lugar que realmente me fez sentir em casa. Eram todos tão amigáveis e acolhedores e o hostel era tão limpinho que só dava vontade de ir ficando.
Comprei a minha tão desejada van enquanto estava por lá (SIM, deu certo!) e fiquei a dormir no parque de estacionamento deles por um valor simbólico que me dava direito a usar as instalações (algo bastante comum em Oz).
Foi mesmo difícil dizer adeus, mas o mesmo tempo estava ansiosa por começar a primeiríssima viagem com a minha palmeirinha, a Bella.
(EN) About that chapter I’ll write you later, I’ve just finished it yesterday when I arrived to Airlie Beach, another little paradise where I’ve already started working and where I'll settle for next at least 10 weeks! :)
It will definitely be a year I’ll forever remember.
(PT) Esse capítulo escrevo-te mais tarde, só acabei de o criar ontem, quando cheguei a. Por agora estou numa cidade chamada 1770 e ainda não sei quanto tempo levo até Airlie Beach, outro pequeno paraíso onde vou tentar ficar por uns tempos e procurar trabalho! :)
Está a ser sem dúvida um ano inesquecível.
