(EN) Yap, it has indeed been a while since the last time I wrote you! Such amazing things have happened to me since then - I've met SO many beautiful people, seen SO many incredible places and been to SO many different worlds inside of Australia! It seems like it was a lifetime ago, the chapter I'm about to share with you - but I'll pick up from where I left!
So let's go back to 2020, that crazy year we had! We had just spent three months in lockdown in a paradise called Airlie Beach, in Queensland. Travel was extremely restricted so we spent most of that time together, in a sweet haven called Backpackers by the Bay. We saw a lot of people coming and going and in the end we were a bit more than two handfuls of survivors.
By mid June the restrictions were finally eased and we decided to have a family road trip heading north, until the farthest we could go.
We couldn't have started in a better way than with Magnetic Island - a magical place just 8km away from the mainland. We stayed in an amazing campground surrounded by rainbow lorikeets and koalas, saw the most incredible landscapes, got to meet the cutest rock wallabies and had the best experience in a butterfly sanctuary just around the corner from home ♥
(PT) Sim, já lá vai um tempinho que não vos escrevo por aqui! Vivi tantas coisas bonitas desde então! Conheci tantas pessoas lindas, vi tantos lugares incríveis e estive em tantos mundos diferentes dentro da Austrália! Parece que já se passaram muitas vidas desde o capítulo que estou prestes a partilhar convosco, mas vou retomar onde parei!
Vamos então voltar a 2020, a esse ano meio louco que tivemos! Tínhamos acabado de passar três meses confinados num pequeno paraíso chamado Airlie Beach, em Queensland. Viajar estava fora de questão por isso passámos maior parte do tempo juntos, num lugar lindo chamado Backpackers by the Bay. Vimos muitas pessoas chegar e muitas partir, e no fim das contas os sobreviventes eram pouco mais que uma dezena.
A meio de Junho as restrições foram finalmente levantadas e decidimos fazer uma viagem de família até ao norte, até ao ponto mais longe onde pudessemos ir.
Não podiamos ter começado de melhor maneira se não com a Magnetic Island - um lugar mágico a 8km de Austrália continental. Ficámos num parque de campismo lindo rodeados de periquitos coloridos e coalas, respirámos as paisagens mais incríveis, vimos pela primeira vez cangurus pequenos das rochas e tivemos umna experiência maravilhosa num santuário de borboletas mesmo ao lado de casa ♥
(EN) Nearly 300km further north, we found another wonderful place called the Paronella Park and I felt I was right back to one of my little paradises in Portugal: Sintra ♥ We kept going inland where we could continue our waterfall chase and got to see some pretty amazing ones - I mean, they were stunning! The magical nature around Atherton can easily leave you speechless!
My road trip buddy was Odette, my Dutch sister. The picture of the cow always makes me laugh because I always remember how happy Odette was when she saw it:
- Oh my God! It's a Dutch cow! It's a DUTCH COW!
- Wait, what? That's a normal cow , babe!
- No! It's like the cows we have in Holland! Haven't you noticed that in Australia they're all brown or black?
Well... She was right. From that moment on those became Dutch cows for me as well - even though I grew up surrounded by identical cows in Portugal!
The most magical part of this trip was the fact that the restrictions had just been lifted so very few people were traveling (the state borders were still closed, but let's say that one state in Australia has the equivalent size to at least 2 countries in Europe). Did you get the chance to see how healthy the planet was after having the whole humanity confined? There were SO many animals everywhere! The forests were full of life, the oceans had the most incredible colours and every little being felt safe swimming back to our shores! There was basically no criminality, no garbage, no noise pollution, no traffic jams, no planes crossing the sky 758 times a day... I know it was an extremely difficult year for most of us, but it was also a blessing to the planet.
(PT) Quase 300km a norte há outro pequeno paraíso chamado Paronella Park que me lembrou muito um dos meus lugares favoritos em Portugal: Sintra ♥ Deixando a costa e seguindo para o interior, continuámos a nossa caça a cascatas - que aventuras lindas tivemos e que sítios maravilhosos! A natureza que rodeia a região de Atherton deixa facilmente qualquer um de boca aberta!
A minha companheira de viagem foi a Odette, a minha irmã Holandesa. A fotografia da vaca faz-me sempre rir porque me lembro o quão contente a Odette estava quando a viu:
- Oh meu Deus! É uma vaca Holandesa! É uma VACA HOLANDESA!
- Erm, babe... É uma vaca normal.
- Não! É igual às vacas da Holanda! Ainda não reparaste que na Austrália as vacas são todas castanhas ou pretas?
Bom, lá razão tinha ela. A partir desse momento também as comecei a chamar vacas Holandesas - mesmo tendo crescido rodeada por vacas muito identicas em Portugal!
As restrições tinham acabado de ser levantadas e foi isso que deu mais magia a toda esta viagem - muito poucas pessoas estavam a viajar (ainda tínhamos as fronteiras fechadas entre estados também, mas digamos que um estado na Austrália é equivalente em tamanho a pelo menos 2 países na Europa). Tiveram a oportunidade de ver o quão saudável o planeta estava depois de toda a humanidade ter estado confinada? Haviam animais por TODAS as partes! As florestas respiravam vida, os oceanos radiavam todos os seus tons de azul e as milhares de espécies marinhas sentiam-se em segurança ao nadar mais perto da costa! Não havia basicamente criminalidade, lixo, poluição sonora, trânsito, aviões a cruzar os céus 758 vezes ao dia... Sei que foi um ano extremamente difícil para a maioria de nós, mas também foi uma benção para o planeta.
(EN) This next picture was taken on a night I remember with much love! We'd had the most beautiful day hiking in Granite Gorge National Park surrounded by wallabies, parrots, lorikeets and turtles. The group decided to stay in the official campground for the night but me and Odette wanted to go a bit off the grid so we parked Bella in the middle of nowhere, like 3km away from them but far enough to be in pitch dark.
It was new moon so it was like we could see every tiny little star in the universe with naked eye! I had to run and get my camera. Odette saw my struggle getting creative over natural tripods (I had brilliantly decided to leave mine in Portugal) and a week later when we said goodbye she gave one... ♥ I still remember that moment every time I use it and those are memories I'll forever cherish :)
The trip couldn't have ended in a better way either! The-farthest-we can-go deal took us to the magical Daintree Rainforest - an unforgettable and unique place. And I mean it - it became one of my favourite places in the whole wide world! Natural springs, sacred places where only women can go, astonishing lizards, birds & trees! It is also one of the favourite hotspots in the country for crocodiles so we were delighted to see LOTS of them and for most of us it was the very first time we were actually in the presence of such powerful animal! It was also the first time I dived into the Aboriginal culture - something you can't do everywhere. Their connection to the land and the way they respect it is something you cannot put into words. After that I got more and more curious about their history and although it broke my heart to see what has happened to this country's natives (like in so many other countries), I still hope one day the indigenous people are heard and accepted by everyone - just like it should be with every single race, religion and culture.
The R/Evolution is LOVE. - something you see written everywhere around here.

(PT) Esta próxima fotografia foi tirada numa noite que ainda hoje me recordo com muito carinho! Tínhamos passado um dia lindo a caminhar pelo Parque Nacional Granite Gorge, rodeados por cangurus pequenos, papagaios, periquitos e tartarugas. O grupo decidiu dormir no parque campismo oficial mas eu e a Odette queríamos escapar um bocadinho da confusão então estacionámos a Bella a uns 3km deles, longe o suficiente para ficarmos na escuridão total.
Era noite de lua nova, então parecia que conseguíamos ver cada estrelinha do universo a olho nú! Fui a correr buscar a minha câmara. A Odette viu o quanto sofri para ser creativa e encontrar o tripé natural perfeito (visto que brilhantemente decidi deixar o meu em Portugal!) e uma semana depois, quando nos despedimos, deu-me um... ♥ Penso nela sempre que o uso e estas são memórias que guardarei para sempre comigo :)
A viagem também não podia ter terminado de melhor maneira! O acordo do "vamos o mais longe que conseguirmos" levou-nos a um cantinho do mundo que é único e inesquecível - a floresta tropical da Daintree. Este tornou-se um dos meus lugares favoritos no mundo inteiro! Piscinas naturais, lugares sagrados onde só mulheres podem entrar, lagartos, pássaros e árvores incríveis! É também um dos lugares favoritos dos crocodilos por isso tivemos a sorte de ver muitos (para a maioria de nós, pela primeira vez)! E também foi lá que comecei a aprender e a ler mais mais sobre a cultura Aborigina - algo que infelizmente não consegues fazer em qualquer lado. A sua ligação à Terra e a maneira como a respeitam não é algo que consiga descrever. Depois dessa experiência fiquei mais e mais curiosa sobre a sua história e apesar de ter ficado desolada ao saber o que se passou com os nativos deste país (como em tantos outros países), ainda tenho esperança de que um dia os indígenas sejam ouvidos e aceites por todos - tal como deveria ser com qualquer raça, religião ou cultura.

Working on this post brought me back such beautiful memories! I've learned a lot during those months in Airlie Beach and this road trip closed that chapter in my life.
I am very happy to say that since then I've reencountered 80% of this group around Australia - hoping to meet the other 20% somewhere in the world since now the doors are open again!

Este post revivou tantas memórias bonitas! Aprendi muito durante estes meses em Airlie Beach e esta viagem fechou esse capítulo da minha vida.
É com um sorriso na cara que digo que desde esta viagem já reencontrei 80% deste grupo em lugares aleatórios na Austrália - continuo à espera de reencontrar os outros 20% num paraíso qualquer pelo mundo, visto que agora já temos portas abertas outra vez!
